Why the Housing Trust of Nova Scotia is Different: Clearing Up the Misconceptions

Did you know that HTNS is not social housing? One of the most common misconceptions we hear is about where we fit on the housing continuum. HTNS provides workforce housing—affordable, non-market rental homes designed for healthcare workers, middle‑income earners, and essential staff who are increasingly priced out of the private rental market but do not qualify for social housing programs.

As a non‑profit organization, the Housing Trust of Nova Scotia is dedicated to creating workforce housing rentals across the province. We partner with municipalities, governments, hospitals, and local organizations to develop, preserve, and revitalize housing that supports local economies and helps essential workers live close to where they work.

Guided by our mission and values, HTNS is committed to building strong, vibrant communities where the workforce and many others have a place to call home. By keeping rents manageable and reinvesting every dollar back into our buildings, we help ensure that working Nova Scotians—from healthcare staff to tradespeople to service workers—can access safe, stable housing that fits their budget.

In a province facing ongoing housing challenges, workforce housing is essential infrastructure. HTNS is proud to fill this critical gap and support the people who keep Nova Scotia running.
