The Housing Trust acquired five multi-family buildings on June 30, 2022. The four-storey buildings are in Halifax and Dartmouth, in walkable communities, near transit, many amenities and busy commercial areas. They were built in the late sixties and early seventies, and over the coming years, we will work to revitalize the buildings and renew many of the units. We’ll also work with green building experts to minimize each building’s environmental impact and enhance the accessibility of up to 20% of the units to meet a diverse range of housing needs.
We are making regular improvements to each building, including new mechanicals and lighting and improvements to common areas. Most of the twenty units that were uninhabitable when we purchased the buildings, because of deferred maintenance and leaks, are now being rented. Major exterior work, including new cladding, windows and doors, is planned for all buildings over the next few years. All of the work will improve housing quality, save operational costs, and contribute to reducing climate change. The Government of Nova Scotia is a major supporter of our work, recognizing that our mission is to provide good quality and affordable housing to working households and people on fixed-incomes.
