The Housing Trust of Nova Scotia joined its provincial partners today as they announced HTNS’ acquisition of three multifamily buildings, adding 90 units to our community rental portfolio.

These new homes in Halifax include:
• 24 units on Westgrove Place
• 22 units on Main Avenue
• 44 units at Mandaville Court

These acquisitions were made possible through the Province’s Capital Housing Acquisition Program (CHAP), along with the support of the Community Housing Capital Fund (CHCF). This combination of financing and grant enables us to protect non-market housing, expand supply, and strengthen communities for the long term. The Halifax Regional Municipality also provided a grant equal to the deed transfer tax on the acquisition through its Affordable Housing Grant program.

Mayor Andy Fillmore highlighted the importance of community-led solutions, stating:
“We need more affordable housing in HRM. Community-led organizations, like the Housing Trust of Nova Scotia, are key partners that ensure affordable housing is paired with strong, vibrant communities. At City Hall, our role is to remove barriers and stand shoulder-to-shoulder with partners delivering solutions.”

We were honoured to join Minister John White at a launch event held at 16 Mandaville Court, where we heard firsthand the impact these investments have on residents. One resident shared:

“I was really worried about renoviction and losing my home, but knowing that HTNS’s approach keeps residents in place has brought me so much peace of mind. Having more people receive the same opportunity means everything to our community”.

HTNS is a non-profit organization dedicated to creating sustainable, non-market rental housing across the province. We partner with communities, governments, and local organizations to develop, preserve, and revitalize homes that facilitates and enables local economies.

Guided by our mission and values, we are committed to building strong, vibrant communities where everyone has a place to call home.

At HTNS, we focus on the workforce. Our housing model is designed for moderate‑income, working households — people who earn too much to qualify for social housing but struggle to keep up with rising market rents. We work to align a households’ rents to 28%–35% of their combined household income.

We are grateful to the Housing Transformation Centre, the Province of Nova Scotia and HRM for their ongoing partnership and commitment. Their support—including through the housing transformation grant—ensures these buildings can continue to serve the people who call them home for years to come. Together, we’re creating a stronger, more equitable future—one home at a time.
