Our affordable housing community at 240 Portland Street in Dartmouth is undergoing a major transformation. The building is receiving a full envelope restoration, including a new roof, solar panels, modern siding, upgraded windows and doors, and significantly improved insulation.
Our construction team is leading this comprehensive renewal, inspecting, repairing, and upgrading critical elements to enhance energy efficiency, comfort, and safety—while extending the life of the building and reducing long-term maintenance costs.
Many units have already completed their renovation while some are ongoing. Located at the corner of Portland and Pleasant Street, adjacent to our 21 Albert Street community, 240 Portland offers 63 units—including 46 one-bedroom and 17 two-bedroom homes—with underground parking for residents.
Following their successful installation at our 27 Evans community in Halifax, Solar Ascent is again partnering with us to integrate solar energy as part of this deep energy retrofit. This important step will help lower operating costs, reduce our environmental footprint, and support long-term affordability through clean, renewable power.
A special thank you to our incredible partners: Co:Work – Heather Bown for the architecture, JDC for general contracting, McCarthy’s Roofing for preparing the roof and solar curbs, Solar Ascent for the solar panel system, and Canada Greener Homes for their support.
We’d also like to thank Dartmouth Councillor, Sam Austin as well as our funding partners: CMHC – Canada Greener Affordable Homes and Co-Investment Fund, HRM – Affordable Housing Grant Program, The Province of Nova Scotia – Community Housing Infrastructure Repair Program (CHIRP), and Efficiency Nova Scotia – The Affordable Housing Program.
Together, we’re investing in greener, healthier, and more affordable communities across Nova Scotia.
